soc_puppet: Adorable art of the Pokémon Piplup; its flippers are clutched close to its chin, its eyes are dewy, and it is blushing, while light pink hearts and bubbles float around it. Originally a sticker for Pokémon Go. (Love Piplup)

Gävlebocken shaped candles. Light them regularly while the real goat is up, burn them until there's nothing left.

Aaaaack!

Today I was productive!

I had a work meeting at noon, which I went to. Afterwards, I helped myself to a free work lunch, because if I'm going to be driving half an hour to my workplace on my day off and then half an hour home for a forty-five minute meeting (usually shorter), I feel entitled to a free meal.

After lunch, I took a walk around campus, since the weather was so nice. Feels good to stretch my legs, etc. On the way home, I picked up groceries from Aldi.

Once I got home, Molly the dog informed me that she was very lonely, possibly because Mom and Dad had left shortly before I'd arrived to go see Project Hail Mary. I didn't put two and two together on that front until after I'd been home for more than an hour, at which point it was time to feed the dog. With the dog fed, I realized it would soon also be time to feed me (and possibly my parents, depending on when they got home from the movie), so I threw together my favorite no-boil pasta dish. That gave me a forty minute window to also walk the dog while it was baking, which was a little stressful because Molly was being obstinate (who could have predicted this of a Dachshund-terrier mix? /sarcasm) and I was on a time limit, but we ended up making it home with around seven minutes to spare. Yay!

Mom and Dad got home when I was eating my second bowl of pasta, and after everyone was done eating, I packed up the leftovers and set the dish in the sink to soak. And then, well.

I'd remembered earlier on my drive to work, and on my first walk after work, but after that it had completely slipped my mind until just now:

Tonight I still need to close Amnesty for [community profile] summerofthe69 and get ready to open theme suggestions on Thursday 🤦‍♀️

Welp! Time for a quick rest, and then I'll start on that post.

Thoughts on Curbcutter Arguments

I've been looking for an excuse to scream this somewhere, so I may as well do it here and now:

Yes, it sucks that people need to be convinced and cajoled into supporting marginalized people and defending their rights, usually by pointing out how bad things that target marginalized people usually have a knock-on bad effect on privileged people. Take the curbcutter effect, for example: Cutting curbs to make smoother transitions to the street from the sidewalk had benefits for lots of people besides wheelchair users, but helping wheelchair users should be enough in and of itself.

Unfortunately, sometimes that's what it takes. If you're appealing to someone who hasn't had a chance to think about it very hard, who isn't used to thinking much about how difficult the world can be to navigate, sometimes you have to point out the ways in which helping marginalized and dispriviliged people can also help them and their loved ones. And if that's what it takes, then I'm going to keep on doing it. That's going to be part of my public tool set for as long as I need one.

I can complain about how much it sucks that they hadn't yet learned to care about us on their own with my similarly feeling friends, but until we get the desired result (and possibly even after that as necessary), I'm also going to keep on pointing out curbcutter benefits to anyone who isn't sold yet.

Pokémon Legends Z-A again

Still plugging away at this! I've mostly gotten over the motion sickness, but it does pop up from time to time. That said, a new contender for annoying traits has arisen: The absolute supremacy of the night/day changeover. Surely, even if simply challenging someone in the Z-A Royale isn't enough to override the change, being mid-battle with a wild Pokémon should be?

Speaking of things getting interrupted in the Z-A Royale, I'm definitely miffed that another trainer can spot and challenge me when I've already sent my Pokémon to challenge them. Very annoying! I should absolutely get first strike if I've already targeted their 'mon and set mine to attack it! Harrumph!

On the plus side, in addition to the guaranteed shiny Mareep, I've picked up a shiny Alpha Bellsprout and a shiny regular size Weedle, so I'm ahead of the game on shinies! Thank goodness for the shiny announcement side effect, or I never would've noticed the Weedle.
